This year is the 75th Annual Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Basketball Tournament. The tournament will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina for the 15th year in a row—this will be the last time before the tournament moves to Baltimore for three years.
Founded in 1912, the CIAA conference is the first African American athletic conference and is one of the most recognized conferences in Division II. The conference consists of 12 schools from North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland. The CIAA Basketball Tournament has a rich history in college basketball. Since the tournaments creation in 1946 fans have poured out. It is recorded that in 1946 3,000 fans attended—the arena only sat 2,000.
As the years have progressed the tournament has grown, and attendance has grown. It has become a staple event for each school. Alongside loyal fans come years of memorable games and memorable names. Over 75 years of incredible basketball it is no surprise that the CIAA has churned out some big name athletes such as Sam Jones, who was a key part of the Boston Celtics title or Fred “Curly” Neal—a legendary Harlem Globetrotter, just to name a couple.
Another reason the CIAA basketball tournament is so special is the fact that it represents men’s and women’s basketball. In 1975, the CIAA added women’s basketball to the annual basketball tournament demonstrating inclusion and encouraging even more attendance from students and alumni.
For students who attend schools within the CIAA the basketball tournament is a sporting event that should not be missed. With men’s and women’s basketball coming together over a 4-day tournament it is a sporting event that brings everyone together. Specifically, for one school within the Raleigh- Durham area, Saint Augustine’s University.
As the tournament is fast approaching the Falcon’s are gearing up for not only dominance on the basketball court but dominance in the stands. If there is one thing the Falcon’s do not lack it is school pride and coming together to encourage their sports teams.
